A malignant tumour of skin arising from pigment cells
They refer to a malignant (or cancerous) tumour of skin arising from pigment cells (melanocytes) which usually lie at the junction of epidermis and dermis. These structures are illustrated on the diagram of normal skin, along with lymphatic capillaries which are important as they are the main route of spread for this form of skin cancer.
